Kozin's Six Goals, Three Assists Lead #13 Women's Lacrosse to 13-6 Win Over Wheaton

MEDFORD – Senior tri-captain Lara Kozin (Suffern, NY) finished with team season-highs of six goals and nine points as the #13 Tufts women's lacrosse team wrapped up its non-league schedule with a 13-6 win against Wheaton College on Thursday afternoon at Bello Field.

Kozin had three goals and three assists in the first half as the hosts bolted to a 9-2 lead in the game. The victory was the third straight for Tufts, which improved to 7-3 overall. Wheaton, which was led by two goals and an assist from senior tri-captain Hailey Colburn (Concord, NH), lost its second straight dropping to 9-5.

The Jumbos scored the first four goals, with Kozin assisting two and scoring one. Sophomore Kate Applegate (Chadds Ford, PA) had a goal and an assist during the opening run.

The Lyons scored two of the next three goals, by senior tri-captain Sydney Ferguson (Jamestown, RI) and sophomore Charlotte DeSantis (Darien, CT), making it 5-2 Jumbos. That was the score until Tufts finished the half with four goals in the final four minutes. Junior Kerry Eaton (Norfolk, MA) netted three of them. She would finish with four goals and two assists.

The Jumbos pushed their margin to 11-2 in the first six minutes of the second half on goals by Kozin and classmate Kelly Hyland(Acton, MA). Colburn had the next two for Wheaton, giving her 59 on the season and pulling the visitors within 11-4 at the 13-minute mark.

The teams traded goals from there, with Kozin scoring twice for Tufts and senior tri-captain Katie Powers (Ashburnham, MA) and sophomore Leila Mills (Brunswick, ME) tallying for Wheaton. The single-season record holder for points at Tufts with 88 last year, Kozin has 48 points on 21 goals and 27 assists in 10 games this year.

The Jumbos finished with advantages in shots (30-24) and groundballs (26-14) over Wheaton. Senior defenders Maggie Casey (Wayne, PA) and Katie Lotz (Montclair, NJ) both had four groundballs for Tufts. Junior Meg Boland (New Canaan, CT) had four draw controls, helping Tufts to a 13-8 lead in the category overall. Junior Tess Shapanka (Sudbury, MA) earned the victory in goal, making eight saves in 52:50 of play.

Sophomore Hannah Whitley's (Bow, NH) three groundballs led Wheaton, while Mills collected two early draw controls. First-year goalie Katy Ananian (Belmont, MA) caused a team-high three turnovers while making eight saves.

Tufts returns to NESCAC action at Amherst on Saturday at noon. Wheaton has a NEWMAC game at home against Wellesley on Tuesday at 4 pm.
