WASHINGTON, DC --- Three Howard women's lacrosse players scored their first goals of the season but the Lady Bison struggled as a whole offensively in a 19-3 loss to LIU Brooklyn Friday afternoon in the season opener for both teams.
Howard (0-1), who opened the season at home for the first time since 2013, found itself tied early in the game after senior Michaela Jupiter scored on a free position shot to knot the game at 1-1 with 22 minutes left in the first half.
LIU (1-0) would score eight straight goals before the Lady Bison would score again, this time getting an unassisted goal from redshirt junior Taylor Gainey with 25 minutes left in the second half to cut the Blackbirds' lead to 9-2. The goal was the first of Gainey's career.
HU's final goal came about six minutes later as freshman Natia Warren also netted her first score as a Lady Bison with an unassisted shot at the 19:43 mark.
The game was the first for current Interim Head Coach Marguerite Lanaux, who takes over the Lady Bison program for the second time after coaching the team for two seasons (2006-07).
